Do ghosts exist? Have you met a ghost?

Is there any ghost in this world? Does ghost exist at all? Has anyone seen a real ghost? Anyone ever talked to a ghost? Is there a so-called Fourth Dimension? What do you think?

Since time immemorial, humans of all races and creeds have been fascinated with the notion of ghost. The Chinese have a penchant to use terms like greedy ghost, hungry ghost, sad ghost, angry ghost and lascivious ghost etc to describe a person’s characteristics.

Every year, the Chinese (not all Chinese), devote a whole month to “celebrate” hungry ghost festival. It falls in August – next month. Whenever our National Day is here, the hungry ghost festival follows suit. Tons of incense burning and celebrations all over the island just spring up.

I’ve written an article as a student on the hungry ghost festival. Click here to read the article.

The English would say, “What the devil?”, “Who’s the devil?” and also the all time favourite “Devil’s advocate!” Are you a Devil’s advocate? Read here to understand more about ghost phenomenon.

In the year 1983, when I was a young constable , I was assigned to escort dead bodies in a police hearse to the mortuary. In those days, we had to escort dead bodies to the mortuary from the scene of crime.

Sometimes, I had to carry out my duty in the wee hours of the morning. I still remember the SGH mortuary opposite the current Outram Park MRT station. I had to ensure that the dead body was placed in one of the metal box drawers in the cold storage. The particulars of the dead body with case report number written on a disc had to be tagged on the right leg near to the heel.

Sometimes, the dead body was in bad shape especially those involved in an industrial accident or suicide by jumping from high rise building. If the body was decomposed, it’s even worse. Usually I would be excused from duty for the rest of the day after escorting a badly decomposed body. The 1,000 times of fishy smell would linger on my uniform causing so much discomfort around me with the nauseating rotten stench. At times, my uniform had to be disposed off after escorting a decomposed body. As a child, I lived through those bucket collection excrement days with maggots crawling around when the night soil collector came once a week to clear. Trust me, It’s nothing when compared to a badly decomposed body.

Imagine in the wee hours of the morning, walking around he huge cold storage in extremely low temperature and tagging the dead body, I could hear my own foot steps and the beat of my heart. The echo in the dead silence of the night was eerie. Even with a drop of the pin could startle the brave hearted.

For countless times, I could sense the presence of ghosts in the desolate mortuary but never fated to meet one.

Subsequently, I was posted to “J” Division or Jurong police station as a patrol officer. It was fun and interesting there.

On night shift, together with my partner, we would drive the patrol car deep into Lim Chu Kang cemetery or even Po Yang reservoir off end of Jln Bahar area. Those days, there was not much development there esp Neo Tiew area near to Tengah airbase and Keat Hong camp near to Chao Chu Kang / Teck Whye areas.

Taking my rest deep into the cemetary at Lim Chu Kang was most serene. I prefer the Christian or Muslim cemetery where there was not much graphic images or statues. Whereas, the Chinese cemetery is full of colourful illuminous idols at the tomb stones with thick incense smell in the air. But then, we still need to patrol and check for vandals or suspicios characters inside the Chinese cemetery.

Numerous patrols in the Chinese cemetery in Lim Chu Kang during the dead silence of the night didn’t give me the honour of meeting any ghost. I would have requested for a promotion if I had met any ghost. However, I did come across many cases of ritual worship or even fortune seekers there. Sometimes, groups of bikers with young screaming girls would rampage through the cemetery disturbing the serenity. We even came across couples doing gymnastics inside their cars! How could the resident ghosts forgive them? Really langgar.

Nevertheless, I have never seen any ghost in all my life. I wish I could. But some of my colleagues did! Few of them claim that they saw a lady ghost in white in Changi depot. They swore till the end of the world that they witnessed that same lady ghost at the tracks, sidings and pantry.

The picture below is a recent ghost sighting captured by our night railway maintenance staff. It’s on the railway track near to Ulu Padang depot towards Jurong East station. This picture was posted on FB. It’s circulated amongst the SMRT staff generating much debate.

I read that some netizens also saw ghosts in trains or stations esp Novena, Marina or Bishan stations. Maybe, it’s due to the first train suicide case of a young lady at the portal of Bishan station tunnel. But most of us feel that the Marina Bay station staff toilet is spooky. No train driver dares go in there. The floor is bone dry. I’ve never come across any toilet that is in such bone dry condition. Really eerie.

Please share your ghost story here if you do come across. I would like to hear your ghostly experience.

It is very hard to find a ghost in train stations anymore. Ghosts also dun like crowded trains.

    • Francis says:

Indeed, nowsday I find overwhelming foreigners much more scary than the ghost. Even the ghost feel lost as 2nd class citizens LOL

  2. agongkia says:

Yes,Gintai, time to talk more about ladies in white or men in different colour and give our men in white a break.
How I wish I can share with you on my interaction with a lady in white but better not before you or some psychiatrist says I am not fit to post comments or penalise me.
Whether they exist or not,I always believe in showing respect to them by saying “SIAM ” ,or whatever, whether I check into any hotel room or using a temporary toilet.
Learn and continue with the practise of saying “SIAM”.hehe..

    • I won’t “siam.” I’ll ask for 4-D. After all, how often you got a chance to meet a ghost? I never had.

“How I wish I can share with you on my interaction with a lady in white …”
We would like to hear from you. Just post it here. Can you introduce her to me?

      • Francis says:

that photograph of the lady in white is quite scary. I used to frequent those area , and i can tell you that it is very spooky in that area as it is surrounded with forest. That part of road is very usually very quiet and eerie whenever you take 173 bus pass by that road at night. You have just have those strange feeling that you are been watched whenever you pass it at night.

At first, I thought that MRT has hired a extraordinary security guard to vent off vandalism, which unfortunately also frighten away its human guard LOL. Positively, mrt may have the ghost to thank for as no one will dare to venture at night to that area for vandalism, save cost and money for security LOL …

At the end of the day, people doesn’t need to fear the ghost if they did not commit evil thing. They don’t need bodyguards and gurkhas guard like those MIW.

        • Lol! Ghosts won’t haunt you if you do no evil. Like I said only the just and righteous will smell good once they are gone. The evil will be cursed!

Those people in the Above Quote would have caused many to claim that they had met ghosts, especially to those very imaginative and those who would not dare to probe further.

Maybe You can asked the Marina Bay Station Cleaners about the spooky toilet.

Just wonder why no one ever claimed to meet any spirit in broad daylight, even if they are sleeping, could at least see them resting, right?

    • Ghosts or spirits shun broad daylight. They are always portrayed as nocturnal beings active under cover of darkness.

    • agongkia says:

No need to ask the cleaner lah.Gintai will start to tell you he also heard of trainee marching in the “PX” parade square in the night without seeing trainee around and langgar with his OSA again.Give Gintai a break.

  4. bookjunkie says:

I was riveted by this post but I have to admit scared by the photos. Boy I would never be able to have done your job…sounds like the hardest job on the planet.

    • Not really. Years later, when I became an IO, I had to report to mortuary almost every week after a tour of duty, in the presence of next of kin and the duty State Coroner to identify the dead body and also witnessed the post mortem on my “mati” cases. That’s even worst than escorting dead body from the crime scene.
After few years of exposure, I realize that once your are dead and wrapped up with a piece of white hospital cloth, life becomes naturally insignificant whether you’re rich or poor, strong or weak, pretty or ugly, smart or stupid etc. Death is the leveler. It levels all irrespective of your status in life.
Only the just and righteous smell good after he’s gone.

      • Francis says:

What is the difference between wrapping white and wearing white with a lightning logo ?

      • bookjunkie says:

what you said is so wise and true. Boy but you really had such a tough job. It’s good that the family members had someone with empathy around.

  5. Francis says:

Recent photograph of proof that ghost exists .
All right, they are always here for you but you just can’t see them …

  6. Francis says:

Is there a correlationship between ghost and spirit ?
It is really a strange phenomenon of natural world that when someone close to you pass away, that it becomes a big butterfly or moth during the passing period appear in your house, staying there for quite a long time as though they want to see the last of you before moving to next life. It happens to me just when grandpa , grandma pass away. Huge butterfly/moth that I never before other than in museum appears on the wall staring at us … It is kind of eerie and sad feeling.

    • Yup. I also had that same eerie experience. You are quite right. It just can’t be explained.

      • Anonymous says:

Let me venture to explain the presences of butterfly and moth at wakes.
They are most likely attracted by the flowers at the alter and the wreaths that are laid around.
The bright lighting too is another attraction. The combinations of lighting and flowers make it more inviting to butterfly and moth.

        • Francis says:

          My dear darling LOL,
my house is as plain as normal, nothing special is put on during those day of passing at home, and the moth/butterfly appeared, though I should have check its body for “some magic number” since so coincidence, it may strike me lottery. I have put so many flowers and plant at home in normal day, and not a single butterfly/moth/weird insects in sight to give me face, let alone a extraordinary large insect. Very sinister, doesn’t it ?

I remember two large butterflies appear on the walls, and my family is happy to see that at last grandpa and grandma are finally happily reunited in another spiritual world.

I should have take a photo of it for memoir … and because i miss that I cannot say like Hojin that “I live a life of no regret”. No, it is not a billion dollar national asset loss but those lost opportunity money can never buy, making me regret.

        • Hi Darling,
Suggest that you take a look at this. Author on 4th to 9th dimensions with millions sold. A Japanese expert on the supernatural.

        • agongkia says:

          Darling ah,
I know you are a non believer but still I wanted to share this with you though actually I am not suppose to reveal.
There was this kampong boy who was resettled and stay with his parent in a flat.He had only 2 potted plants taken from his kampong house and left outside his flat .No butterfly or any insect noted for 3 years .Soon after, the mother passed away on the 3rd year.
After which,he started to realise that there are See Suai singing continuously from his plant. He feel bad as the singing may caused noise pollution to his neighbour.
He sense and feel that it could be his beloved mother still having some worry on him and is reluctant to go.
Till the 49th day on the 7th week of prayer,he went to whisper to the plant as he couldn’t find the See Suai.
Ma,not to worry,I will fulfil your wish of seeing me getting married and settle down and take good care of papa..You can go peacefully .
The next morning after that no more See Suai singing till today. So sometime it can be coincident, sometime you just have to believe.
In case you dun know what I mean by See Suai,I think they call it cricket.
And dun doubt what I wrote, because that poor little boy who lost his mother is ME.

          • Agongkia,
Thank you for telling us your touching personal story. It’s the supernatural forces that could not be explained.

  7. NUS Boy says:

The last picture you posted quite spooky.

  8. tomatoes says:

One PRC lady ghost in white appeared in
the bus during Broad Day Light! Scolding
and screaming old ladies! Day time also 见鬼!
And now still not yet the chinese 7th month!

  9. Lohcifer says:

A long time ago, when I was made partner at one of those big 5 firms of yesteryear, a kindly senior partner presented me with a statue of Zhong Kui – the Chinese ghost catcher. While I appreciate the gift, I asked him why he did that, are there ghosts in the office? He said, no, it’s to ward against foreign devils – kwai lo. LOL.

  10. Darling says:

Me am atheist, however I do believe when and where there is life there is spirit. But i also feel that when life ends, the spirit will be gone with it. Personally, me believes life and spirit are one and not independent or separate entity in a body. Me am not able to discuss beyond this personal view, do forgive.
