愚公移山 (yú gōng yí shān) is a Chinese folklore of an old man in his 90s named 愚公 determined to remove a huge mountain in front of his house. The mountain was blocking his path leading to his house. The old man named 愚公 (愚 actually meant foolish) and his family had to make a big detour to get to his house. So he summoned all his children and grandchildren to get rid of the mountain.

When others laughed at the foolish old man’s enterprise, he retorted that all his future generations would carry out the task. One day, the mountain would be gone.

The Jade Emperor was moved by that foolish old man’s perseverance. He then gave instruction to the gods to move the mountain elsewhere.

The idiom 愚公移山 (yú gōng yí shān) literally meant Foolish Old Man Shifting Mountain. He may be foolish but his attributes such as tenacity, dedication, sacrifices and determination etc where “pay” was never the issue are universally acknowledged worthy values to emulate.
