Hi Gintai,

I'm writing to you from the Life! section of The Straits Times. I was hoping to get in touch with Dr Mike Loh, and was wondering if you might have his email? I run a regular column called the Collectors Series, and was hoping to feature his son's collection of Soviet-era headgear and masks (http://lohandbehold.com/2011/11/21/a-most-unusual-collection/).

Please let me know if you can help.

I do not see a place to reply on your CISCO scandal post, so I am doing it here. I hope you move this.

I was shocked and disturbed to read the news. Why? Because I am a customer of CISCO! Co-incidentally, I am returning to Singapore to place some more items in my box there. But just earlier today I read some financial assessment news about Singapore that suggests that Hong Kong is actual a better choice for western expats in Asia. When I told a friend that I trust private companies more than banks he cautioned me, suggesting that safety boxes can be broken in to as an INSIDE job. Here is why I do as a precaution:

1. Divide up my portable hard assets in several nations.
2. Keep a log, and make a photocopy when I depart. Memory can do tricks.

I was impressed by the gun-toting Tamil female guards, the security precautions (have to shoew passport), etc. Now I am not so sure. Surely, two keys are needed to get at the box, as a previous poster has remarked. But it must be that there is a master key because should one lose both one's keys for a fee they can be replaced. So, I can only think of 3-4 possible explanations...

1. The customers who have complained are factually incorrect (they either remembered incorrectly or lied, or some combination of the two)
2. Someone in management is dishonest (presumably regular employees would not have access to master keys)
3. There is a major security weakness at CISCO

What I want to know is did these persons claiming to have items go missing (and in one case reappear!), did they keep a log of contents? Did anyone else have access to the box? Often times family is more of a risk than strangers. What is the current status of the complaints?

I once was a publisher, and when an incident occurred that compromised my customers' privacy, I officially announced it to them all. I lost some of them as a result. But I didn't try to hide what happened.

I have lost faith in CISCO based on this post. And if indeed internal lock boxes are not possible I will either insist on using my own box or closing my account.

Way to go Gintai. It would be wonderful if you can trace out the history of Singapore much before Raffles and put it in brief for all the readers. Not many take efforts in going to Library to trace out the history say 500 years ago.

You can show the progression thru chain of events leading to this wonderful, modern yet very Asian city steeped with traditional culture called Singapore. I love your writings and your contribution to the coming generation is immense. Keep it up my dear friend.

Dear Sir/Madam,

On behalf of the National Library Board (NLB), we would like to invite you to pledge your blog to the Singapore Memory Project as part of efforts to collect memories that are already manifested in existing online channels.

The Singapore Memory Project (SMP) is a national initiative to collect, preserve and provide access to Singapore’s knowledge materials. Spearheaded by NLB, the SMP aims to build a national collection of content in diverse formats (including print, audio and video), to preserve them in digital form, and make them available for discovery and research.

By pledging your blog to SMP, you are affirming that every memory matters. Whether your posts are an account of your daily life, or an expression of your thoughts, the SMP hopes to find a home for your memories so that it can help build towards an understanding of Singapore. You will also receive a badge that you can display on your blog in recognition of your contributions.

Contributors to this blog pledging initiative will be listed on Singapore Memory portal’s blog pledging webpage. All blogs pledged to SMP will archived using NLB’s web harvesting software, in addition to images of each blog’s landing page.

If you are keen to pledge your blog to SMP, simply fill up our response form at this following URL: http://singaporememory.simulation.com.sg/Public/Pledge.

You may find out more about this initiative at http://www.iremember.sg/blogpledging.

We are looking forward to your contribution.

Hi Gintai,

I just read on TRE about your departure from blogosphere. Those who read Singapore blogs will know that you are among the more articulate bloggers here. Unlike most socio-commentators, you have chosen to reveal your real identity. 明人不做暗事. It is honorable of you to do so and I definitely respect it.

If your departure is somehow related to your identity being out in the open, you may consider assuming an anonymous identity to make responsible comments as if your real identity is known.

I enjoy your online commentary. By the way, do you have an email address? I cannot find it on your blog. If it is private and you do not wish to reveal it, would you mind exchanging email with me? I have entered my email in your form. Thank you.
